The Welch’s Grapevine
for the glory of God!
Dear family and friends,
We send you greetings from Cambodia. Grace, peace, love and hope to you through our Lord Jesus Christ. We never stop thanking Him for what you are doing for us in our ministries in Cambodia and among you. We send our sincere gratitude that because of your love for the Lord you have loved us, supported us, prayed for us and encouraged us time and time again. We hope that these news items that we share with you will encourage you toward greater love and good deeds done in the name of the Lord.
BIBLE SCHOOL NEWS: On Valentines Day Bob & Sandy Jackson from Lubbock, TX arrived for Bob to teach Second Corinthians at the Cambodia Bible Institute. We are delighted that even though we are quite a distance from the school they decided to stay with us for the two weeks they were in Phnom Penh. Bob serves in the Advancement Department of the Sunset International Bible Institute and is a frequent guest teacher at CBI. Sandy spent a day in the countryside with Sharon and they joined us for worship the two Sundays they were with us. We are really grateful for their support and encouragement to us. We hope you will join our prayer for the fruit of Bob’s teaching at CBI.
CHURCH: The brethren of Cambodian Christian Ministries organized and facilitated the second annual Phnom Penh Churches of Christ joint worship at the conclusion of their Medical Mission. All the local churches gathered at the BEST Center where the University church normally meets for a special time of fellowship and worship. We always pray for stronger unity among us and that we will all maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
CHURCH PLANT: While studying the Bible with our SNACK evangelists (more below) our new guard, Rus joined the study. Rus came from a very difficult background—orphaned, abandoned and abused from early childhood. He attended school through the 3rd grade but was then forced out to serve as child labor in the fields. He had already heard the gospel story as the church practiced telling it to one another the week before. Anyway, during our study he was very engaged and it was clear that his faith was growing through each point we discussed. So, Vanna, our lead evangelist spent some time studying with him, answering his questions and building his faith to the point that he requested to be baptized. When the SNACK staff returned from the countryside we welcomed a new brother into the family of God. Please join our prayer for Rus’ faith to grow and for all of us to serve him with love and encouragement in his new life in Christ Jesus.
We also joined with the Singaporean team from Pasir Panjang Church of Christ who are striving to start a new school in Phnom Penh. We enjoyed a “let’s get acquainted” meeting and meal together while they gleaned relevant information from our experiences. We pray the Lord blesses their efforts.
SNACK PROGRAM NEWS: We love to host visitors who come to bless the children. Helen, Phyllis and Sheila had taught for several weeks at the BEST Center and so on their day off they traveled with Sharon to the countryside. We always pray that what our visitors experience will help them in their quest to be transformed into the image of Christ.
Meet our new SNACK teacher, Khay. Her husband is a local preacher and she has been a blessing to the SNACK children. Join our prayer that Khay will be a good teammate to the staff and a huge blessing to the children.
We are constantly looking for ways to help our staff grow in their ability to teach about health, hygiene and nutrition. One Hope taught them new skills using animation, songs and gestures to capture the attention and excitement of the kids. Our prayer is that our staff will be effective teachers and mentors for these precious young souls.
Furthermore, we strive to improve the staff’s ability to share the good news about Jesus in a culturally relevant way. Here are some photos from our studies with new staffers Kunthea and Khay, prospective evangelist, Sokha and new evangelist, Daen. We beg you to fervently pray that much fruit will be produced from our efforts to share the life-changing Story of the Christ with SNACK families.
While Bob & Sandy Jackson were staying with us, Sandy spent a day with Sharon blessing the SNACK children with toothbrushes and toothpaste, gifts from brethren at the Sunset Church of Christ, Lubbock, Texas. A loud shout of thanks to those folks for blessing these kids with important health items. Please join our prayer that acts of kindness and generosity like these will turn hearts toward our loving Father in heaven.
Birthdays, Valentines Day and a personal retreat were a part of our February too. We pray our lives are always a living sacrifice to the Lord and an encouragement to your faith in Jesus.
Eternal love and blessings,
Dennis and Sharon Welch
