Sharon Translating!!!

Friday, I, Sharon, spent the day in the countryside, but this trip was a little different for me!  The day started with me and Marie-Claire McDonough riding with one of the crews in the nutrition truck.  Marie-Claire is the wife of the director for Partners in Progress – Bill McDonough.  Over the past few years she has spent a lot of time meeting and working with many of the local people in the countryside, however, it had been quite a long time since she had visited the particular villages we were scheduled to visit.  Marie-Claire was excited to see how the children had grown and also reuniting with the village leaders to encourage them.  While she knew a few Khmer words, she never really had learned the Khmer language.

Today was the big test…Marie-Claire asked me to translate for her!  Somewhat reluctant (fearing I might say the wrong thing) I decided to embrace this opportunity and give it a try.  Although there are still many words for me to learn, I was able to get the message relayed and everyone had a great time (with a lot of laughs and smiles).

Pumping just a little too fast and the pump handle came out 😉

Thank you Marie-Claire for giving me the extra push I needed and for encouraging me to continue stretching my abilities to converse using the Khmer language.
